Free Attractions

Your Black Hills vacation doesn't have to break the bank.  There are several activities around the hills that will keep you and your pocket book happy! Here is a list of a few of them:

  • Storybook Island - Storybook Island is an admission-free children's theme park in Rapid City, South Dakota. They are open Memorial Day weekend through through Labor Day Weekend from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily. With hands-on playsets and storybook characters that appeal to children of all ages - Storybook Island brings families together, sparks imagination and creates lifelong memories!
  • Dinosaur Park - A free attraction located in Rapid City, Dinosaur Park is a must-see for those dinosaur fans in your family.  Located off Skyline Drive, Dinosaur Park contains seven dinosaur sculptures overlooking Rapid City.  Even if you aren't a big dinosaur fan, the views from Dinosaur Park are worth the steep climb up the flagstone stairs to get there!
  • Hiking & Biking Trails - Spending time outdoors and enjoying the amazing scenery around the Black Hills is an absolute must while you're here. There's no better way to do that than to get out and hit the trails! The Black Hills are home to a wide range of trails. From family-friendly trails to longer more intense trails, the most difficult part of your vacation may just be trying to decide which trails to choose! (Note: Some trails you may need to pay a fee to enter certain areas, such as Custer State Park.)
  • Outdoor Campus WestThe purpose of The Outdoor Campus-West in Rapid City is to provide hands-on experiences in hunting, fishing and other outdoor skills. Free educational classes for youth, adults and families are held throughout the year. Visitors can explore indoor exhibits showcasing a variety of western South Dakota habitats and wildlife, along with a 4,600 gallon freshwater aquarium. The Campus also boasts over 1.5 miles of nature trails for your everyday use.
